Five Martin Co. Residents Arrested in Lewis Co.
Reports out of Lewis Co. say five people from Martin County were arrested last Friday for stripping bark from elm trees in the area of Little Cabin Creek in Lewis Co. Lewis County Sheriff Johnny Bivens said Monday the group was in Lewis County "strictly to remove bark from slippery elm trees," a practice that while not illegal, is detrimental to the tree. Bivens said he has conducted research on the stripping of elm bark, and found for every 50 pounds of bark removed, 12 trees will die. Bivens said one of the arrested men told him he had permission from a landowner in the area to be on the property, but when the landowner was contacted, the information proved to be untrue. Bivens said his office has received complaints from residents in the area of people trespassing onto their property to remove bark. Bivens said the gummy lining of the elm's bark has high demand in the herbal market, sometimes being sold for $3 a pound. It can be used, especially in Appalachia, as a soothing agent for coughs, gastrointestinal ailments, and skin irritations. Bivens said during the course of the investigation, a total of 277 pounds of elm bark was located in large burlap bags. The five trespassers were detained in their vehicle by the property owner until deputies with the Lewis County Sheriff's Office arrived. Amanda Preston, 27 and Karen Mills, 30, were both arrested and charged with complicity to commit theft by unlawful taking. Three male suspects, Gregory Scott, 27, Jeremy Harmon, 31, and Elza Maynard, 66, were charged with theft by unlawful taking, third-degree criminal trespass and third-degree criminal mischief. Harmon was also charged with two outstanding bench warrants from Pike County. All five were taken to the Lewis County Detention Center and where scheduled for arraignment in Lewis County District Court yesterday.

MARTIN COUNTY – May 16, 2012 – Kentucky Route 2031, Elk Creek Road, in Martin County will be closed tomorrow while state highway workers install a new box culvert at Damron Drive, the 3.5 mile marker.
Because of damage from the March 2 tornado and rain event, the inlet end of the box culver was severely damaged. Highway District 12 contractor, Jigsaw, is replacing the culvert with a 48-inch pipe.
“Elk Creek Road has an outlet at both ends,” said Brittany Ball of District 12’s Prestonsburg Section office. “Traffic will keep moving, just a little slower than usual.”
